Have your cake; and eat it too!

OK we've all got the challenge:  how do I make it through the holiday season and stay on track with health and fitness?  Some quick tips (feel free to share your own!):

  • Don't come hungry!  Eat a small snack like almonds and some yogurt before your holiday cocktail parties.  You are much less likely to OVER indulge if you've got a healthy option in your belly.
  • Don't restrict yourself!  Give yourself the opportunity to sample different flavors without over eating.  Take a small plate vs. a large one and choose bites of what you like rather than a big serving of options if you think you'll be inclined to try everything on the table.
  • Watch your alcohol consumption!  This is one of my biggest challenges at holiday parties!  More calories here than you may think and more chance of overindulging of food if you overdrink.  Also, a good workout the next morning will be compromised.
  • Don't be too hard on yourself!  Don't put too much pressure or guilt on yourself.  Stay positive!  Minor setbacks are OK as long as we stay positive and keep moving forward toward our goals.  Too much negativity will only keep us stagnant.
  • Walk!  A great way to aide digestion, engage in conversation, avoid the energy drop we often experience after eating big meals, and burn some calories.
